Country Nr 26 – Eritrea – visiting the relaxed, romantic, Italian-African Asmara

Country 26/196: Eritrea Destination: Asmara Eritrea is called 'the North Korea of Africa'. It is ruled by a totalitarian government that has little regard for human rights. It is one of the least visited countries in the world. However, our experience didn't reflect the facts listed above - at all. We visited the country's capital and we had a great time. Asmara is just...wow! It's nothing like any other African city we've been to. It's more like a romantic Italian city really. Italian architecture, Italian food (as well as tasty Eritrean food), laid-back vibe, beautiful nature, stunning views, and the...

We decided to visit Hargeisa, the capital of Somaliland, an autonomous region of Somalia. Luckily, Hargeisa turned out to be a lovely city. We also visited Laas Geel, an archeological site near the city, where one can admire more than 9000 years old cave paintings and stunning views of the surrounding landscape. Country Nr 23 – Djibouti – the stunning crater lake Assal

Country 23/196: Djibouti Destinations: Lake Assal and Djibouti We always try to visit the country's Nr. 1 attraction, but sometimes it can't be done because it's too dangerous or too far from the airport and sometimes we do visit the place but we end up kinda disappointed since the place looks much better on the internet. Well, this time we managed to visit the country's top attraction and we weren't disappointed at all! Moreover, the famous Lake Assal is WAY more stunning than on the internet. We were overwhelmed. Lake Assal is actually a saline crater lake, which lies 155...

Country Nr 21 – Chad – no photos in N’djamena!

Country 21/196: Chad Destination: N'djamena Well, the first thing every tourist needs to know about N'djamena is that it's forbidden to take photos of the most prominent places and monuments unless you have a special permit from the government. Since we didn't have the permit we had to pay some guards/soldiers to allow us to take at least some shots, but we still had lots of restrictions, so the photos are far from perfect. It's also good to know that there are a lot of soldiers all over the city to make sure that everyone follows the rules (including the...

Country Nr 20 – Nigeria – the contrasts of Lagos

Country 20/196: Nigeria Destination: Lagos Lagos was a roller-coaster for us. First, we met the nicest guy who made the visa gaining process upon arrival very easy for us, even though we didn't have all the necessary paperwork. We were staying at the amazing Maroko bay shore suites and we loved it! The location was great, the staff was very nice, and the room was clean and comfortable. The next day we took a private tour of the city. The price was reasonable and the driver/tour guide was very knowledgeable. He took us to the fanciest and to the poorest...

Country 19/196: Côte d'Ivoire Destination: Abidjan Abidjan is big city life. It's the perfect combination of modern and traditional, the perfect place to experience 21st century Africa. We were staying in the city center and we were very surprised to see how empty the city is on a Sunday. There were almost literally 10 people walking around the city center, whereas on the next day the city was full. Obviously, the people of Abidjan still know how to take time for themselves and their loved ones. We had a great time in "Drogba's country" as they call it. Things to...
