As you may or may not already know, in 2013/14 we went on our ‘first’ honeymoon. We decided to take a six-month trip through North and South America. We visited the USA, the Bahamas, US Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, Turks and Caicos Islands, Dominica, Barbados, St. Lucia, St. Maarten, Jamaica, Cuba, Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Argentina, and Brazil. Each and every destination has so much beauty and so many adventures to offer, which makes it really hard to compare and evaluate them, but we’ll do our best. So, here they are – our 6-month honeymoon highlights. 😉
Top countries
These are the three countries we loved the most. The Bahamas, Cuba, Jamaica, Costa Rica, and Brazil are the closest runner-ups.
Mexico
Some people find Mexico to be overcrowded and therefore, overrated. We would have to disagree. We loved the nature, the beaches, the colorful cities, the happy people, the lively culture, the rich history, the delicious food, the lovely sounds, and the stunning wildlife. The weather was perfect, the prices are mostly reasonable, and during our stay, even the most touristy places weren’t overcrowded.
Peru
We stayed in Peru for eleven amazing days and we fell in love with the country’s great archaeological monuments, colonial cities, breathtaking nature, rich history, and diverse culture. For us, Peru is one of the most amazing countries in the world.
The USA
We have been to New York City, Niagara Falls, Washington DC, Philadelphia, Thousand Islands, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Hoover Dam, Antelope Canyon, the Horseshoe Bend, Monument Valley, the Grand Canyon, and Miami. We have also visited Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands, which are both territories of the U.S. It is amazing how much diverse beauty this country has to offer. Naturally, the USA is one of our favorite countries in the Americas. Warning: it’s also one of the most expensive countries on the American continents.
Top destinations
We have visited countless stunning places, therefore it is almost impossible to choose our favorite ones. Here are some honorable mentions: Niagara Falls (USA), Antelope Canyon (USA), Chichen Itza (Mexico), Guatapé (Colombia), Iguazu Falls (Argentina/Brazil), Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), and many Caribbean beaches. 🙂
Salar de Uyuni, Bolivia
Salar de Uyuni is the closest thing to heaven on Earth and therefore the perfect destination for an adventurous honeymoon.
Puerto Vallarta and the Hidden Beach, Mexico
The magical place where everything went right – the rooftop breakfast, the close encounter with the dolphins and humpback whales, the snorkeling with tropical fish, the beach hidden inside a cave, and the mariachi parade in the evening. Pure joy! <3
Machu Picchu, Peru
It’s no wonder that Machu Picchu was named one of the new wonders of the world. The sight of the ancient ruins surrounded by mountains, valleys, and water streams will blow your mind. 😉
Top beaches
We are big beach lovers, so we made sure to visit as many beaches as possible. Here are our top three beaches in the Americas, but first, the honorable mentions: Mullet Bay Beach (Sint Maarten), Seven-mile beach (Negril, Jamaica), Frenchman’s Cove Beach (Jamaica), Guardalavaca (Cuba), Playa Norte (Isla Mujeres, Mexico), Tulum (Mexico), Starfish Beach (Bocas, Panama), the beaches of Morrocoy National Park (Venezuela), and Copacabana (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil).
St. John – somewhere between the Trunk Bay Beach and Cinnamon Bay Beach
Palm trees, beautiful flora, blue skies, white sand, crystal clear turquoise water and love. What more could you ask for? 🙂
The Bahamas – Half Moon Cay
We have never seen such a beautiful, crystal-clear, light blue sea. And the sand – it is as white and as soft as it gets. We loved it!
Barbados – Bottom Bay beach
We have seen this beach at it’s worst but we loved it anyway – mostly due to its surrounding cliffs, the beautiful nature, and the distinctive Caribbean colors. 🙂
Top adventures
We’ve had our share of amazing adventures. There was the Niagara Falls boat ride, the Stratosphere sky jumping in Las Vegas, the Everglades tour, the waterfall climbing adventure at Dunn’s River Falls in Jamaica, the road trip through the Cuban countryside, the super exciting wildlife tour and snorkeling in Mexico, the crazy ‘chicken bus’ rides in Guatemala, horseback riding on the beach on Ometepe Island in Nicaragua, snorkeling at the Starfish Beach in Panama, the hike to Machu Picchu Mountain in Peru, the breathtaking ride through Salar de Uyuni, the hike through Iguazu National Park, and many more. These three were our favorite ones.
The Amazon rainforest adventure, Ecuador
Canoeing or hiking through the Amazon rainforest, searching for anacondas, dodging caimans, hanging with shamans, trying to attract poisonous snakes and insects, and scary sounds in the night. ‘Adventure’ may be an understatement. 😀
Arizona road trip, USA
In Las Vegas, we rented a Mustang convertible and went on a three-day road trip through Arizona. It was an unforgettable experience! 🙂
Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary tour in Belize
Hiking through a tropical rainforest is pretty exciting in itself, but when you add fresh jaguar footprints in the mud and river tubing, it becomes an awesome adventure! 🙂
Top romantic experiences
Even the craziest adventures are romantic if you share them with your loved one. For us, every sunrise, sunset, picnic, dinner, beautiful sight, and stroll along the beach is full of romance. <3 However, these three were the most memorable experiences.
Everything about Cuba
Vintage cars, colorful buildings, retro atmosphere, salsa dancing, gorgeous beaches, hot weather, beautiful art, sexy music, tasty food, and cocktails – in Cuba everything is romantic.
Hot springs at the Arenal Volcano
Costa Rica is one of the most beautiful countries in Central America. It offers numerous romantic sights and experiences. Our favorite one was the night dip in Tabacon hot springs.
Tango in Buenos Aires
Fine wine and good food, lovely sights, sexy sounds, and tango! Buenos Aires is the capital of passion and a great honeymoon destination.
This is a really awesome collection of the places that you’ve went on your honeymoon and places that I have been wanting to go for a long time!
I never actually went to America as I mostly visit Asian countries to where would your best recommendation to visit for holidays be?
Looking forward to your reply and really cool article!
Every place we visit has something unique to offer, which makes it very difficult to answer your question. Moreover, we all have different preferences so it really depends on your like and dislikes. However, we do recommend Mexico to everyone. It really has everything – the nature, the historical sites, the beaches, the food, the people, … We’ve recommended it to many and they all fell in love with it.
