Country 29/196: South Sudan
Destination: Juba
South Sudan is the youngest sovereign country in the world. We’ve had the pleasure to visit Juba – their capital city and we loved the fact that there are so many banners and movements promoting peace. We visited some pretty amazing places and we especially enjoyed the laid-back vibe at the beautiful Da Vinci bar on the banks of the White Nile and the Agrey Jaden cultural center, a place where people fight for peace and sustainability.
South Sudan, we thank you for your hospitality! Wishing you peace and love.
Note: Currently it is not safe to travel to South Sudan.
Things to see and things to do
Due to political uprisings, South Sudan is not a very safe or popular tourist destination. Nonetheless, here is a list of some of Juba’s top attractions:
- All Saints Cathedral
- The White Nile riverbank
- St.Theresa Cathedral
- St. Joseph’s Catholic Church
- Main Mosque

Food and transportation prices in South Sudan are mostly inexpensive. Accommodation prices and other tourist services may be quite pricey, due to the lack of facilities and providers.
Best time to visit
Due to political instability, visiting South Sudan is currently not a good idea. Weather-wise, however, the best time to visit the country is during the winter (from December to February) when the weather is sunny and dry and the temperatures are only slightly cooler than during the summer.
Environmental issues
South Sudan is dealing with a wide variety of environmental problems, including soil degradation due to the widespread deforestation with consequent loss of wildlife habitats, pollution of freshwater bodies, overfishing, and scarcity of natural resources, like water and land, deepening the many existing conflicts in the country. Environmental issues cause biodiversity loss and impact on people’s health. Waterborne diseases are very common, mostly due to widespread water contamination and inadequate disposal of both solid and liquid waste.
On the other side, the youngest country on Earth has recently addressed decades of environmental degradation, climate change, and other environmental challenges. They have pledged to resolve those issues and to implement effective institutions to resolve disputes over ownership of natural resources peacefully.
