Nicaragua travel itinerary

Nicaragua is known as the land of lakes and volcanoes due to its 50 volcanoes (7 of them are still active) and many alluring lakes (the most well-known ones being Lake Nicaragua and Lake Managua). The country is also famous for its warm climate, beautiful scenery, great beaches, extensive tropical rainforests, vast biodiversity, lovely colonial cities, cultural and ethnic diversity, rum and coffee, tasty cuisine, remarkable artists, writers and poets, and highly developed ecotourism.

Our four-day Nicaragua honeymoon itinerary (things to see and things to do)

DAY 1

We arrived in Managua the previous evening after an almost two-day bus ride. Naturally, we were exhausted. We spent the entire day in bed. In the evening we finally dressed up and went out – after all, it was Christmas Eve. 🙂 Since Christmas is a family holiday, there wasn’t much going on in the city. It actually took us quite a while before we found an open restaurant – well, it was really more of a sports bar, but they did have some Christmas decorations, nice food, and a pool table, so we ended up having a great time. 😉

DAY 2

Granada is a beautiful colonial city and one of Nicaragua’s most popular tourist attractions.

Catedral de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción Granada

We took a stroll around the city and instantly fell in love with its spirit and architecture – we loved the narrow streets, colorful buildings, the famous Catedral de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción – Our Lady of the Assumption Cathedral and other colonial churches, and of course the city’s charming location – it’s located along the coast of Lake Nicaragua.

DAY 3

We took a bus to San Jorge and there we took a ferry to Ometepe Island – an island formed by two volcanoes (Volcán Concepción and Volcán Maderas) rising out of Lake Nicaragua. Ometepe is a popular tourist destination, mostly due to its beautiful sights, peaceful atmosphere, incredible nature and wildlife, archeological sites and a long list of adventures it has to offer.

DAY 4

Exploring Ometepe. We woke up early in the morning and went hiking through the jungle. We were lucky enough to see a lot of beautiful animals in their natural habitat. Afterwards, we went horseback riding on the beach. The saddle was old and uncomfortable and we knew that our behinds would hurt for days afterwards, but it was still an amazing experience. 😉 In the afternoon we took a ferry back to San Jorge and there we took a bus to Costa Rica. 🙂
